Voice Over Tool Not Working

Hi Beau,
the audio-input of your VO-tool is hooked to audio input 2, so if your input is on channel 1 of your audio-hardware it wont be recored.

please check your audio-configuration within FCP as well.

Thank you, Danny. So if my M-Audio box only has an XLR input on channel 1, I’ll need to come up with a 1/4 inch source for Channel 2 if I want the VO tool to work properly? Is that correct?

I guess that could solve the problem, correct – but in fact, I have no M-Audio-Hardware. the audio-input-thing is a general from FCP.

Where are you getting this Daniel? Although I certainly can’t speak with experience of every audio device that might be used with FCP’s Voice Over Tool, the least I can do in light of your post is attest to the fact that it is categorically untrue of any device I have used with the VO Tool … and indeed, to quote the FCP manual, when working with dual channel devices it is effectively audio input 2 that is ignored :

When recording, the Voice Over tool works with the Sound Manager to record in mono mode. When you choose the audio interface input for a stereo input device, the Voice Over tool uses only the left input channel (channel 1) of a stereo input device when recording; the right channel is ignored.

With this in mind Beau, you might want to check your settings … if your device is dual channel then make sure you are not using and/or have not panned your device output to channel 2, else the VO Tool won’t pick it up.

I hope that I have figured out the issue, but I won’t be able to check until later this afternoon. After looking into the manual (I sometimes forget FCP comes with one) I may have narrowed down the problem to having to install the actual software driver for the M-Audio box. I’ve just setup a new machine, and haven’t had a chance to install every last little piece of software.

While my OS recognizes still recognizes the device, I think I may need the software dashboard to actually allow FCP to see the separate input channels of it.

Anyway, this may all be some crackpot theory, but I’ll test it this afternoon when my session is through. I’ll let you know.

damed – you´re right!

sorry for my mistake – of course it is the left channel 1 that will be connected to FCP.

But (a2) is the connection for VO to your timeline, which audio-track on the timeline will be connected will have the VO-audio afterwards, that was my mistake.

That was far to early this morning – I had an very early shift today.
