voice over tool
Posted by Nigel Rich on February 24, 2009 at 10:34 amJust trying to use the voice over tool to lay a guide track. Cannot get any mic input to it, either via Blackmagic decklink or via the Mac line in connection. I have checked as many settings all over the place and no luck! Anyone have any ideas?

Is your Mic selected there?

February 24, 2009 at 10:42 amAnd then in the Voice Over Tool itself you tried selecting that particular mic? If it doesn’t show up at all, then it’s either not supported by the Mac or it might have some sort of a problem.
I’ve successfully used both a Blue Snowball USB Mic and a Logitech USB Headset to record scratch tracks with the VO Tool along with using a standard professional mic through a Mackie Mixer to my AJA IoLA.

February 24, 2009 at 11:01 amHi,
I’ve had the same problem: I found on my system that when using the Mac’s line in (fed from an unbalanced, mic amp) FCP, or possibly the actual OS, sometimes looks at the right channel and not the left. I checked my wiring which obviously isn’t exactly complicated for phono to 3.5mm jack and can’t find anything wrong. Just sometimes I have to swap sides. Maybe that’s what’s happening on your system: the Mac is deciding to look at ch2 for the mic audio and not ch1. Also trashing the prefs/restart has definitely brought the mic back to life for me on more than one system.
Hope this gives you something!
Todd.

February 24, 2009 at 11:28 amHmmm!
A pro mic is connected via a Spirit audio mixer through to Blackmagic, as are four different tape decks. All audio works when in the FCP capture window – but nothing when in the vo tool with decklink selected.
I did manage to have both the capture window and the vo tool opened at once – vo audio worked then. Although on trying again after changing some settings a message box now says that the capture and vo windows cannot be open at the same time – they can because I did it!
Guess there must be some fundamental snag somewhere – I’ll keep looking! Thanks again – any further ideas will be gratefully received.

February 24, 2009 at 1:35 pmHey, I have a Blackmagic Eclipse. Audio capture works fine, but i think the VO tool just doesn’t recognise Blackmagic kit properly.

February 24, 2009 at 3:06 pmHi Todd / Dan – thanks for your time
Sounds like Dan has had a similar problem with Blackmagic not being accessed by the vo tool- I am going to try a USB mike.
Thanks again

May 5, 2009 at 1:40 pmMy VO’s I do them with my old betacam sp machine generating some kind of video signal so my decklink Extreme HD is able to capture any audio.
I used to capture through sountrack, but now it, maybe with the new drivers, has so many bugs, I can’t get any steady configuration. So I have to capture through final cut, with my UVW generating video, but with the video option off and no machine control. My microphone is connected to a Mackie Micro 1202-VLZ and then to Decklink by unbalanced XLR cable.
It is, of course, very annoying because under Soundtrack I used to edit and treat the sound immediately. Does anyone know what can be causing this?Miguel Figueiredo
