  • Voice over speed increase without effecting pitch?

Posted by Silveradojones on December 18, 2006 at 10:38 pm

I’m in need of squishing about 40 frames of VO into about 20 frames.
How do I increase the speed of a VO, without effecting the pitch?

I don’t want to make my client sound like a chipmunk!

    Thanks!

Soundtrack Pro has a feature that will do this. I think it’s called Time Compression or something like that.

Nothing can compress 50% without very serious artifacts. I have pushed MPEX by 10% but beyond that it is unnatural. MPEX is built into Pyramix and Nuendo. Soundtrack pro I haven’t tested but again the time compression is unrealistic.

In soundtrack pro there is a function under “process” that is called “timestretch.”

You can stretch or shrink the time, without effecting the pitch, noticeably.
It is found under the “process” menu, then “timestretch.” Change the time by stretching or shrinking, using sample units, frames, or even seconds. It’s like a built in Micro Machine Guy filter (that really fast talking fella from back in the day).

It worked for my use, anyhow!

    Thanks all!

You can keep the whole process in FCP – adjust the speed of the clip to fit the gap you have then apply the Pitch Shift audio filter to bring the pitch back down.

Have to agree tho, at double speed, your voice over artist is going to sound like a Dalek! I’ve used it successfully (even in vision) to 105-110%
