Hello everyone. I use a MBP for mostly field work with an AJA IO HD or a Matrox MX02/LE for editing golf/soccer highlights. Now, I have to start recording VO for the edited highlights program. I’ve shortlisted the following for recording VO via the USB port,
    1. Blue YETI (USB mic)
    2. Blue Snowball (USB mic)
    3. Samson C01u (USB mic)
    4. Mobile Pre (USB recording interface)
    5. Apogee ONE ((USB recording interface)
I don’t really need a mic as the OB would have one that I can borrow and it has to be through USB as the FW 800 and express card/34 slots are used for external storage and video I/O devices. Can anyone please suggest what would work best? Also, portability is a big factor as I travel a lot for on-site editing. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Shane. I read some reviews on the net about the blue snowball which said that the gain is not high enough. Is it good enough for VO recording in terms of quality and level? Thanks.

Also Shane, do you think it’s worth the extra money in getting the Blue Yeti?

    Kannan,

I use the setup described here – https://www.kensummerall.com/portable-voice-over-booth – with the Blue Snowball. I have no problems with the amount of gain that I get. The whole setup is very portable.

Don’t even think about using the Blue Snowball. Mine is on Ebay right now because there is just no way to get enough volume out of it. I have never been able to use it because of that. My computer settings are correct too. Even if I speak very loudly directly into the mic. it is so quiet I can’t use it. Also, I get a LOT of ambient noise feeding into the system with it. My cheapo headset mic. works much better. Be warned and good luck!

I mainly use mine for TEMP VO…because I am not a VO guy. I also use it for my podcast, and it is fine for that…I just boost the audio a little.

If you want a PRO mic for your MASTER VO… well, I bow to others on that one. I don’t do that.

Thanks Ken, Ron and Shane. Really appreciate your feedback.
Ken, the porta booth looks interesting. Am going to try it myself. The only question is what mic am i going to use. This is for broadcast and the quality has to be good enough for it.
Has anyone used the Apogee One, Shure X2U or the MicPort Pro? Right now, I’m leaning towards the Blue Yeti or the Shure X2U. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks once again guys.

Achieving a professional quality VO in such conditions is difficult but not impossible.

Friend of mine is using the sound devices preamp https://www.sounddevices.com/products/usbpre2.htm and, of course, a lip mike. No matter how noisy your environment the lip mike will work where all other mikes will give up.

A second vote here for the SoundDevices USBPre, extremely rugged little boxes … we use them together with Coles lip mics. Excellent combo.
