VO Audio Playback Issues FCP 6
Running a G5, Dual 2.7, 10.4.11, FCP 6.0.4, Quicktime 7.5.5
I have a client who is experiencing peculiar audio playback issues in his timeline sequence, when playing back VO he has recorded through a microphone/yamaha mixing desk/line input. The audio appears to have recorded fine as it often plays back without error in the finder AND in other sequences. But the problem returns intermittently during playback in FCP and apart from it being very annoying, it makes the audio unusable and hard to cut with. To be more precise, the audio crackles and stutters and even repeats split second portions of it in playback (ie if speaking the word “stutter” it would sound like “st, stutter”). The source audio file is your standard AIFF, 16-bit Integer (Big Endian), Stereo, 48.000kHz file and is recorded using the VO Tool in FCP. The problem appears to lay in the processing of the file in FCP.

Is the distortion exacltly in the same places? If so, it’s the media.
If the distortion migrates each time, it might still be the media. FCP doesn’t process v/o any differently once it is written to disk from RAM.
Find the file and export it, even if it’s just to the same settings.
If the exported file exhibits the same issues, it’s the original media, not FCP.
You can also try simply duplicating the file at the Finder.Give us a few more hours as the west coast wakes up. You’ll get some additional or better advice soon.
