I know that VO have been discussed here quite often. My question is… for a hobbyist.. not making projects for paying clients. Is the best option just to talk directly into your DV cam mic while running the VO tool in FCP. Or to make them somewhat better should one buy a USB audio interface and a nicer ($100) mic.

I know that people will forgive bad video but audio makes a world of difference. I also know the value of getting a pro. I’m not looking to cut anyone out of a job just trying to get smarter at this stuff. I also know that this is a huge topic and I’m playing on the low end. Just hunting for ideas.

If you want to TRY the VO with an on-camera mic, go ahead.
If you then think it sounds OK for what you need, who’s to argue?

There will simply be very significant improvements using a pro VO mic, proper technique, good mic placement in a quiet room, and a trained voice-over talent.

But, since you say you already concede this, give it a go any way you’d like.

If you want to go a little bit more “pro” there are some very nice inexpensive units that can serve you quite well (in some ways, JUST as well as much more expensive units) in the audio department.

    Mic:
Amazingly pro sound for voice-over (or about ANYTHING). Under $60.

    Mixer:
You’ll need one with Phantom Power to operate (and adjust level of) the mic. Plus you can use it for other mixing jobs. Under $50

    USB input:
Feed in from the mixer. Record any audio source to the Mac. Under $40.

Plus, you’ll need various cables, patch-cords and audio adapters to hook everything up (and a Mic stand!)
Don’t spend extra on those high-priced “Creature Cables”… they do not “improve” the sound… but they do “deplete” your budget.

There are other mixers that have more features that cost appropriately more.
And you can spend a LOT more on a studio mic, but this one is AMAZING for the money.
There are many other sources for the gear than the links I gave you.
You can search for them if you’d like.
I can say that I’ve bought from Musician’s Friend in the past and had good luck.
