VITC or LTC
Posted by Steve Cohen on May 22, 2008 at 2:00 pmI got an e-mail from on of our networks stating that the VITC and LTC on a dub we sent them did not match.
This was dubbed on a Sony DVW-A500 Digi Beta deck.
I’m not sure how to check that on the new dub I just made.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

May 22, 2008 at 2:12 pmIf in any step you have used INSERT (so you have used a stripped tape), the tape can have the stripped LTC and the VITC embed in the picture could be different.
This happens quite often when setting up wrong a VTR. It happens to me no few times working with Betacam. But sorry I can not remember clearly how to do it.Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1

..and always a big mess on top of the table. -

May 22, 2008 at 2:24 pmNo there were no insert edits, but it wasn’t blacked either.
I laid down 10 sec of black and then did an assemble edit with the internal TC set to Regen. Thanks,

May 22, 2008 at 2:40 pmWhat is clear is that when you record you can generate only one TC. I mean, you can not generate two different TC at the same time.

May 22, 2008 at 2:46 pmsounds like you did it correct, so it
could be as simple as a dirty head on the deck.Have your engineer clean the heads (or if you dare use a cleaning cassette).
I’d just try it again.
I assume you have the deck handy, therefore you should be able to switch back and forth on the timecode display and see if they match. -

May 22, 2008 at 3:02 pmI would make sure VITC switch is on, so that it is being recorded. Then I would set timecode to internal, set the start time of the deck’s tc generator to the time near what your sequence uses, and black a minute or so. Then you can switch the TC display (via menu?) between VITC and LTC and play back this section to make sure the two timecodes match.
Then I’d switch the TC to regenerate, and use edit to tape from FCP. The serial control should locate the timecode on the tape that matches your sequence, then sync the internal TC generator to match as it inserts video and audio and both types of timecode through the rest of the blacked portion and continues through the unblacked portion to the end of your show.
I don’t have that particulary deck, but this method has worked on other Sony models.
Perhaps now you’re not writing any VITC, so you’re getting old VITC that was on the source video.

May 22, 2008 at 3:33 pmThat is pretty much what I have done. I just wasn’t sure how to switch between VITC & LTC on the TC display, but it seems to be a menu function.
I’ll look at that.
Thanks everyone.

May 22, 2008 at 5:40 pmIn the TC display set it to Time & Time. 2 TC displays will be stacked. I believe VITC will be on top LTC on the bottom just shuttle fast through the tape and the one that loses track is VITC. If you do not see both displays then change the vertical position of the display until you see both TCs.

May 24, 2008 at 9:34 ammost common mistake is if the VITC of the source isn’t blanked.
Did you make a dub from FCP? If so, did you presevere the first lines? (check the video out in HV delay, if you see the moving white blocks on the top of the image, you’ve got a problem.)
If so, solution is to wipe them off.If you made a dub from a VTR to the digi, be sure to set blanking to ON (in the menu, depending on the VCR)
