  • VITC doesn’t match LTC?

    Hi folks,

I layed off an NTSC project to a Sony DVW M-2000 out of Media Composer and experienced mismatched timecode when paused on a still frame. I’ve never encountered this before and all my deck/Avid settings appeared to be the same as usual.

I have a feeling this is an issue from the Avid side of things because when I then layed in bars and tone directly from my generator, the LTC and VITC matched when played and paused, as it should.

Any thoughts? And on a similar note, what are the “dangers” of a mismatch in VITC and LTC further down the pipeline in broadcast stations, etc.?

Avid cannot affect that. This is something set on your deck incorrectly.

well that narrows it down. I am thinking it was a sort of fluke, maybe something to do with the insert point on the tape that tripped up the VITC? It’s a real mystery.

Were you insert editing or assemble editing?

If you are insert editing, and your TC generator is set to external as opposed to internal, or free run, you will end up with VITC that is incorrect.

Definitely a deck issue…. but down the line it is likely a broadcaster may reject the master if VITC and LTC don’t match.
