Visible gradation in source video – any way to “smooth” it out?

Well Stephen M., I did mention the dominant color on the shots of the source video was dark blue, perhaps this could link to how the human eye has lower sensitivity to blue than green or red, I had other shots where yellow was the dominant color but banding wasn’t present, “bit-budgets” and such I guess.

I hate color banding, which is one of the reasons I’m looking to upgrade to a camera with 422 or 444 chroma sampling and 10 bit color. Of course, the compression and deliver method affects this as well, but at least with a camera like the Panasonic GH4 (which can do 1080p 444 color video down sampled from the 4k video shot using a memory card!) or the Sony FS100 you can get that much higher bit depth and chroma sampling to avoid banding in camera.
