Virus Protection for media imports?
A bit off topic. I’ve kept my Vegas workstation pretty clean & separate from general PC use, internet, etc. But I’m getting more files from clients via internet, thumbdrives, CF etc. Any recommendations for Virus / Malware protection that won’t cause conflicts? Been using Windows Defender on the Workstation since it’s free and simple.
One of my PC buds likes WebRoot because it’s cloudbased and doesn’t tie up PC assets. I ask this question because a TV station I did biz with had some virus/malware issues from client thumbdrives for importing media assets. They thought they were protected turns out they weren’t. They went with an expensive proprietary setup. I’m looking at something a lot more affordable.

Microsoft Security Essentials is probably your best solution for now. In all of he “tests” I have seen in the PC magazines, MSE is always one of the top performers.
How is a “cloud-based” database different from daily updates from the host server? If the program goes to the cloud every time it does a virus scan, then you will see a significant hit on productivity. If the program just checks the database version before a scan, it still has to “phone home”. If the program checks the cloud database once each day, how is that different?
Besides, when it comes to malware or viruses that insert themselves into a system file, who would know if this happens better than Microsoft.

I guess the theory behind cloud-based virus protection is that you don’t tie up as much RAM / drivespace as you would with a traditional “loaded” program. And because it is remotely managed, you get real-time updates that don’t tie up your system?
Just assuming everything works as it should. As a side note:
the PC folks I use whenever I need a problem fixed are of the opinion that MSE doesn’t go far enough as far as total protection is concerned. Hence their WebRoot referral. BTW..they aren’t selling me software either, just offering an opinion.Thanks for the reply.

I’ve been suing AVG Free for years and never had any problems with it interfering with my video work.

If the few Mb of virus data is a problem, then you seriously need a bigger hard disk.
Seriously paranoid people run multiple virus scanners, which is an opportunity for other stability problems.
The best protection is to not plug your editing PC into the web. Use a cheap second PC for your email, web browsing and other general work.

Actually, that will not help the original poster who asked how to protect himself from viruses on client’s thumb drives or external hard drive. The best protection in this case is to run good anti-virus software because you can’t totally isolate your editing workstation when you have clients giving you physical media.

On that cheap second PC, install MS Security Essentials and another good one like AVG or Avast, then pre-scan anything you plan on plugging into your editing PC.
