Virtual Clips – HOW ??
I have Premiere Pro CS3.
With my old ancient version of Premiere, I used to arrange all my clips on the timeline and then – because my Camcorder video is dull, I would then make one Virtual Clip that contained all the clips to the left. I simply blocked them all together, and then the cursor changed to a double-arrow and I dragged the clips to the right and dropped !! Instantly a Virtual Clip would appear there and I applied the Levels and Color Saturation filters to it.But now with Premiere Pro, there is no such Tool to do this that I can find. There are 4 double-arrow tools: Rolling Edit, Ripple Edit, Slip Tool, and Slide Tool. I tried them all, and none of them made a virtual clip. I then tried selection all clips and Right-clicked the selected “Group”. But when I applied the Levels filter it failed completely. And when I tried to adjust the Speed it was greyed out. I had to Ungroup the clips to “Un-Grey” the Speed setting. What good is it to Group clips if you cannot apply a Video filter or a Speed setting to the Group ?
So I searched the Premiere Help and there is not one mention of the term “Virtual Clip”. I Googled it – many sites popped up but none that explained HOW to make a Virtual Clip out of my side-by-side clips on the timeline. I also searched here in Creative Cow – quite a few hits but they all just said things like “You should use a Virual Clip to do that”, etc. but without saying How to make one.
Can someone explain how to do this in Photoshop CS3 ?? Today I was trying to add a couple of filters to ALL of my clips at once and I wanted to change the Speed of them all. A virtual clip will allow me to go that while still leaving all the original clips intact and untouched. Thanks !!

I think what you are wanting to do is called nesting.
basically you have all the clips you would have as a single (virtual) clip in one sequence. Then you would make a new sequence and add the first (virtual) sequence into the new one.
The other way around would be to edit, select the part you want as a virtual clip cut the selection, make a new sequence and name it so you know it’s your virtual clip, then past the clips you cut into this new seq. Then add the sequence into the original sequences’ edit by dragging and dropping from the project panel.

That’s the problem – I do not know how to to that? Can you give me the steps?
Your next sentence says, “Then you would make a new sequence and add the first (virtual) sequence into the new one.”
Not only do I not know how to do that – but I must ask you . . . . . . . assuming I knew how to accomplish that . . . then why would I “add that first Virual sequence into a new one”. I do not know HOW to make the “First Virtual Sequence”.
I appreciate the Help but I just can not follow the response. I was hoping for a step-by-step . . . “select that Tool which is located “here” and then drag to select all clips, and then drag them to “there” which is locatred to the right of “this” . . .etc . . . etc
Sort of a more basic How-To if possible.

Yes, a long-term mystery. There must be a way to do it because it is so useful. So far I copy the Filters from one clip to the next, but if you have 10 or 15 clips stacked along the Timeline . . . what a pain. It works but much slower than the Virtual Clip technique.
Maybe Adobe removed that feature entirely ?
I just tried Jon’s nesting clips solution but like you, I just couldn’t figure out the steps. -
I found the steps !!!
1) on the timeline drag all clips in, side-by-side. That will add them to “Sequence 01”
2) in the Project Window at the bottom, click the “New Item” button and select “Sequence”. That will add a new empty timeline with a Tab at the top called “Sequence 02”.
3) drag Sequence 01 into the timeline and you will then see your “Virtual Clip” and all the clips from Sequence 01 but they will show as a single clip !!
4) Now just drag and drop any Video Effect you wish to the Virtuyal Clip in Sequence 02
DONE !!!
