I’d like to add some edge effects to some of my movies/scenes. I’m doing mostly internal corporate videos and web based promos and would like them to be a little more stylized.

I’d suggest just working your way through some of the basic tutorials here at the cow … I use AE to do all my border/vignette effects just because I find it easy to use… if you were just doing stills (like a tacky picture frame or something) you could just make it in PS and then use any NLE to comp it on……

after you pick up some more of the basics of AE then I’m sure you’ll be fine … or at least you’ll have questions about more specific effects …

    hope this helps

Have not seen the Illusionist yet, but would really like to. Two obvious techniques; use layer masks to either cut away the outer edge of the video or by inverting the mask and cutting a hole in your ‘Frame” layer. Also study using alpha and luma layers with track matting techniques. Masks and mattes are the two most obvious areas of study I can think of in AE for you to get what you want. Cow Tuts and Trish & Chris Meyers Books on AE are great for getting into this stuff as well as expanding the basic techniques into more creative possibilities.

For vignettes, I like to have them animated……

I like to create a solid, add an oval mask, feather the mask, then I like to add the turbulent displace to the solid layer. You will have to tweak the filter’s parameters to get you movement to your liking.

I like to use this layer as a track matte for a duplication of my underlying video, adding blur to the underlying video. I then set the original solid to a mode, depending on the color of the solid.
