Viewing selected ‘range’. Or view in to out in viewer

This is sending me crazy. So I’ve selected a ‘range’ of a clip in the browser and I’m about to overwrite it to the timeline. Now I want to view the range I’ve just selected before I put it onto the timeline. In FCP7 I would just hit up (I think it is called previous edit) presuming I’m in the canvas and the play head would jump to the in point and I could just hit space bar and see the clip that I just selected before I used it but I can’t work out how to do this quickly in X? I’ve tried hitting ; which is previous edit but it just extends the range to the begginning o fth eclip losing my inpoint? I’m sure this is very simple but I can’t work it out?

I think the same FCP 7 shortcut here applies to X. Shift + I to jump to your in point.

I think we are talking about the same thing?

You’ve marked a selection in your clip in browser, now you want to jump to the IN point and playback before editing to timeline?

Shift + i works for me, jumps to selection in point. Shift + O jumps to out point.

Have a look in the “Mark” menu at the top, “GOTO” submenu, selection Start, and Selection End.

Shift I and Shift O work for me too.

Also, just hit the forward slash key /
It plays the selection from in to out. Super simple.

I’m calling it FCX. They took the “pro” out, so I will too.

Pressing backslash will automatically play from the beginning of the selection in the events.

1. Select in / out points in the event viewer.
2. Press “/” to playback (it will automatically play from beginning of the range to the end)
3. Cmd+L to toggle looping (or View menu > Playback > Loop Playback)

I may be wrong, but I think the question is about playing selection in the timeline, not in the event browser.
I’m not comfortable either in selecting areas on the timeline, not on a clip.

If it is on the timeline, you can use either the range selection tool (“R”) or define precisely using “I” and “O” keys in the timeline.

Pressing “/” plays back the range.

As Brendan says, Shift-I, Shift-O moves the playhead to In / Out points.
But pressing “/” will play from the In point.

The right section has to be highlighted. i.e. if you want to play in Event (cmd+1), Timeline (cmd+3).
