  • Viewing SD 16×19 issues with Kona-2

New to the Kona 2 and trying to figure out how to view 16×9 SD on ntsc monitor using Kona 2.

    – SDX900 DV50 24p 16×9 footage
    – SD93 DV50 deck – serial digital out to sdi in 1 on Kona 2
    – FCP easy set up set to Kona 2 NTSC 8-bit to DV50
    – Sequence settings at 720×480, NTSC DV 3:2, anamorphic 16:9 checked
    – 13″ Sony PVM-14M2U monitor set at 16×9, viewing through K2 component analog out
    – K2 control panel set to 525i29.97 in and out on sdi 1,
frame buffer at 525i29.97, no up or down conversion
    video format 525i29.97
    analog out at 525i29.97/betacam

During log & capture the ntsc monitor and canvas window display 16×9 properly.

When the footage is then dropped in to the fcp time line, canvas remains 16×9 but, the ntsc monitor displays a squished from the sides image…looks as if it’s not cropped but pushed in on the each side/black.

Funny thing is as I write this with Safari up the ntsc monitor goes back to a proper 16×9 displayin the timeline properly, yet the second I click in fcp it jumps back to the squished from the sides look.

Certainly this is an operator issue since I am new on the K2/fcp but not sure what I’ve done wrong.

    Thank you!

Bump…ok, so it appears there is not a anamorphic easy setup for SD with the Kona drivers…does this mean I am better off capturing via good old firewire with the apple dv50 anamorphic easy set up?

No, not at all. All you need to do is create a new preset as anamorphic and you’re in business. I just did this very thing on the very same gear you have for a project I am in the middle of. I don’t have fcp in front of me at the moment so please take these instructions as a loose guide.

Choose Kona’s dv 50 easy set up (control-q). Go into your audio/video settings under the Final Cut Pro menu and duplicate the sequence preset, check the anamorphic box, and rename it to include anamorphic. Duplicate the capture preset and check the anamorphic box and rename it to include anamorphic, keep the capture device preset the same. Click the summary tab and make sure your new capture and sequence are selected in the drop down menus and click create new easy set up. name it something cool and obvious and you’re up and running, no sweat.
