  • Viewer shows accurate color, while video in Canvas looks washed out

This has been driving me mad for years…figured it was time I finally figured out the problem. If I bring up the same exact clip in both the Canvas and the viewer, the color is different. The Canvas shows accurate color, matching both the raw footage and whatever is exported from FCP. The Viewer shows the video slightly washed out or muted, which often throws me because I think it needs color correction when it doesn’t. Is there a setting I need to change?

Here you say right the opposite than in the post subject:
“Viewer shows accurate color, while video in Canvas looks washed out”.
    Which one looks OK?

What kind of footage are you editing?
    Sequence settings?
    Do you have QT.7 installed?
    Is the sequence rendered?

Footage is MOV files shot on Canon 7D (24p)
    Sequence settings: 1920×1080 – HDTV 1080i (16:9); Compressor: H264
    Yes, QT7 is installed.
    Yes, sequence is rendered.

You shouldn’ be editing that kind of footage directly in FC.
    H264 is not supported.
If you have already edited your sequence you can change the sequence codec by Prores-422 and set rendering in 8bYUV or High Precision YUV.
Next time you better convert the footage before editing.

Thank you, the re-rendering after changing the sequence settings seems to have fixed the problem. I’ll be sure to convert future footage to Pro-Res codec prior to importing to FCP.
