  • Viewer and External Monitor doesn’t playback at same time

Posted by Phillip Roh on November 2, 2007 at 2:02 pm

When watching clips in the viewer window, they playback fine. But on my external monitor, it only shows the first frame from when it’s played. when I stop playback, the external monitor then shows the last frame the Viewer window is stopped on. How can I fix it so that the viewer and external monitor playback the clip at the same time?

At the moment we’re digitizing footage with the Offline RT Photo JPEG codec set to 75% quality.

A few days ago we were digitizing footage at 35% quality and that footage plays back fine. We moved to 75% quality at the editor’s request. A few days ago we had created a few sample 75% quality tests for the editor to view. I loaded those clips into Final Cut right now and they playback fine as well. So it’s all of a sudden just these new clips created yesterday :S.

The timeline plays all the footage back properly on both the canvas window and the external monitor. The playback ‘freeze’ only happens if I open a clip from the browser into the viewer. If I open a clip from the timeline into the viewer, it plays-back fine!

Try set your canvas to 100% or “Fit to window”.

    G5 tower -> Firewire cable -> Canopus ADVC110 -> Widescreen LCD monitor.

This identical setup worked on a previous show, and also when we were using offline rt @ 35% quality.

I doubt that this is the solution but have you tried view/external video/all frames ?
    just a thought

Have you adjusted the Playback Offset?
Check the manual for it and try that.

    Phill,
I don’t know the Canopus, I’ve just had a look in Google.
The truth is that I don’t think the Canopus is able to manage any other codec than DV. I’m not sure, but I don’t think that can manage PhotoJPG.
Now I do not monitor via FireWire, but I’ve been doing that for few years. A TV conected through FireWire to the analog output of the camera or desk.
I don;t know now with FC 6, but at least with FC 5.1.2 I was only able to monitor DV or DV50 via FireWire. The rest of the codecs they just play as you say it’s happens to you. Freezed in the monitor while playing in the canvas. When you hit stop, the FireWire buffer is refreshed, and the still where the playhead is parked shows on the monitor.
I remember not being able to watch in the TV some PhotoJPG at 100%. I’ve never tried with a ompressed PhotoJPG. Now I have PhotoJPGE in the external monitor, but via BlackMagic.

Right now I have some test clips:
    JPG @ 35%, JPG @ 75%, and DV25
The Canopus is able to playout the 35% and DV25 at the same time as the viewer. Only the 75% doesn’t playout through Canopus when viewing clip from browser.

A few years ago I had a Canopus ADVC-100. The ONLY format that it would play back consistantly was DV25. It was unable to playback any other codec at all. It would freeze on the current frame when I played any video other than DV25. It sounds pretty much like what you are describing. I’m guessing that it might be tour problem. I bought an AJA IOLA to replace the Canopus.

I tried using an AJA IoLA. But in that case I was able to get playback on my video monitor, but NOT in the viewer. But I haven’t spent much time troubleshooting that situation. Were you able to get it working? If so, could you describe your setup? Does changing JPG quality percentage have any effect on the setup?

Right now trying out a Decklink (don’t know what flavor) and it works fine, but squeezes the image an extreme amount. I’ll start fooling around with the AJA!
