video with no red, operator with no color correction knowledge
Posted by Nick Lammers on April 13, 2006 at 8:11 pmHi. I received a tape of a lecture – it looks as if the camera was defective and there are no reds in the video (green, martian skin tones). I have opened the 3-way color corrector but my experimentation could take hours. Any shorts cuts, or magic wands, would be appreciated. Thanks.

April 13, 2006 at 8:40 pmThe 3 Way Color Corrector HAS built-in “magic wands” (eye-droppers, actually).
Open the control panel (tab) that has the 3 Color Wheels.
Next to each (White, Mid, Black) you’ll find an “eye-dropper”.Touch the White’s eye-dropper to an area on the image that is “supposed to be” white.
Touch the Black’s eye-dropper to an area on the image that is “supposed to be” black.
Touch the Mid’s eye-dropper to an area on the image that is “supposed to be” grey(ish).
That’s it, with some tweaking you should be able to make it look as “good as possible”.

Or, there’s always THAT.

April 13, 2006 at 9:23 pmWhat format was the footage shot on? Was the signal an analog component feed or digital?
If the camera had a problem outputting the proper color channels to tape and indeed you are missing some of the color information then you are screwed.
A quick check is to play color bars at the end of the tape and confirm if it is missing color also.
The only method to restore what is missing is to paint in the missing color which would take you forever.
However if the operator had the wrong color correction filter dialed in this would result in the wrong white balance which you could color correct in FCP.
Look for white, gray and black in the shot and use the three way color corrector to adjust.

April 13, 2006 at 9:29 pmThe footage was recorded on a DVCam deck with output coming from an analog camera. The bars look fine. I’ll try the corrector and see what happens – at least it should improve things some.

April 13, 2006 at 9:41 pmBars should look fine if it’s a chip problem. IE the red chip was shot. If there’s at least a little red in there, then it can be boosted and color corrected – but it’s always gonna look odd.

What “those” are you asking about?
The eye-droppers (next to the 3 “color wheels) are for setting white, mid and black levels to “neutral” (like a camera’s auto white-balance”).
I use them all the time and they work in an instant. -

April 13, 2006 at 11:50 pmIMHO,
My big guess is that the camera was using component cables to the deck and one of the cables was loose or bad.
If the red cable was shot, it would make everyone look green.
BUT, The fact that the bars are ok, is strange… hummm…
I think you
