Hmmm Make a whole lot of textures and apply them to random selections on the sphere.
This plug in will help you make selections:

with that many images it might be easier to do it in AE/FCP etc. then wrap one texture made of many around a simple sphere…

Thanks for the response, Brian, but raster will be an issue. The camera will need to travel fairly close to the video images. I realize I can possibly perform some trickery between C4D and AE to make this work, but am still wondering how to map those images like they are mapped with the tile shader…

My client has already made this work in Maya, but I am trying to recreate in Cinema 4D. Wondering if it can be done, as I know the shader network in Maya is more advanced than it is in Cinema.

how many clips are actually going to be used to map to the sphere?

The client has provided me with plenty of 720p clips of video game footage.

I would say I have more than 100 clips to choose from and use.

While I don’t have to use them all, they just want me to create the illusion that there are hundreds of thousands of individual clips mapped to the sphere. Same effect as a huge video wall, except mapped to the sphere.

Just wanted to say thanks for the suggestions.

In the end what worked was using MoGraph multishader create to a large video wall made of planes, rendering that to a QT, then texturing the sphere using the projector texture with the QT movie on the sphere.

Nice, in my testing I used a Mograph video wall pulled into a sphere with the Wrap deformer but it was still Mograph and slowed moving around in the editor that is totally sweet as a solution.
