Video Trim in AE?
Posted by Jameson Sheppard on February 12, 2009 at 12:07 amI want to make simple cuts in After Effects instead of having to drag the timeline of the video I’m using. Is there a way to set in/out points or use a razor-blade like tool such as the one in Final Cut?

February 12, 2009 at 5:17 amYou can press “Alt/Option + [” to trim the layer at the current marker (Left bracket “[” puts left edge to marker right bracket “]” puts right edge to marker).
You can also use Edit > split layer to create two layers split at the current time which is handy for ‘editing’.
If you want to do any real editing though its best to use Premiere and import – it’s much much easier.

Only in after effects do children get to pick and whip their parents.

February 12, 2009 at 2:29 pmThanks, that’s exactly what I needed.
I just have a couple of video files I need to grab like 5 seconds out of, so this works perfectly.

March 12, 2013 at 10:30 pmThere is a way to delete a part of the footage. You should press B at the beginning of the part you want to cut out and N at the end. Then go to Edit -> Extract Work Area. You will get ripple deletion.

March 5, 2021 at 10:32 amYou can check this article out: https://www.joyoshare.com/video-cutting/cut-video-in-after-effects.html
Sometimes I would also use Joyoshare VidiKit to cut videos losslessly. It supports entering start/end time of a video into the temporal interval with millisecond precision. It is much more easy-to-use I think.
