Video Toaster Effects
Posted by Harlan Johnson on March 27, 2008 at 4:07 pmI’m curious: Is there anyone out there who has developed a way to incorporate Video Toaster Effects into Final Cut Pro? I miss them.

The closest you will get is using Hollywood FX on a PC using Premiere.

March 27, 2008 at 5:33 pmVideonics mixers had similar effects and they now make an HD version ($10,000.00) but I don’t know if they added the 500 effects from the previous generation.

March 27, 2008 at 5:52 pmHi Harlan:
Wow, cheesy goodness! I was one of the first owners of a Video Toaster back in the day. My suggestion would be to just hunt down a working Toaster, they are still out there and you could score one for just a few hundred bucks. Wish I still had mine. You do know that they were SD only and composite only, right? No HD love, at least on the Amiga versions. I never used the PC version, not sure if they still had the cheese-o-matic Kiki effects, falling sheep, etc.
Good luck,
Dan

I seem to recall S-video option cards you could get. When the Flyer came out although you were editing composite it was digital composite which was huge back then. 1″ and beta formats were composite and it was 500 lines of it so it looked pretty good. The Toaster Flyer got around the generation loss. I only saw demos of the pc versions and by that era things had changed (and so likely did the transitions). Trinitys are available on ebay in the $500.00 range but Global systems has some protection on the sales of those systems (even the blue and orange boxes that were called Trinity) so ebay removes the ads. You are only allowed to sell parts on ebay. When people un-knowingly list them they only stay up for a couple days before the Global agents spot em and then they’re gone.

March 27, 2008 at 9:20 pmNewtek makes the TriCaster now. But i think the fun factor on the transitions is pretty low – I don’t recall finding any Kiki wipes when I got a chance to play with it.
What I miss is chromaFX.

March 28, 2008 at 1:22 amThanks everyone – so far I guess there’s nothing out there. I do have a Video Toaster Flyer that I haven’t touched for 10 years – and this summer I hope to get it going again – but I’d love to have those toaster effects and an effects interface like the one NewTek used and be able to use it in FCP. It was so intuitive and easier to use than the pull- down words describing effects in FCP! I’ll keep on watching this thread and keep hoping..

March 28, 2008 at 2:06 pmI just spent the last 3 years at a job using the VT5(Video Toaster) and indeed many of the old cheese wipes including falling sheep are still there. They’ve even added quite a few new ones. Chroma FX is also included. Unfortunately it is PC only. However, in the spirit of Newtek, I’ll bet if you put it out there on the VT forum, someone like Bob Tasca might take up the challenge and make them for FCP. Ya jes don’t know until ya axkuh.
