I keep having issues with the video stuttering on this one scene of a short film I am editing. Halfway through a shot on video track one I have placed another video on track two whose opacity starts at 0 and gradually moves up to 100 as the other video track plays underneath. Eventually the video on track one disappears and you can only see video track two. The problem is that once the playhead hits video track two the video starts to stutter and the video freezes but the audio keeps on playing. I have 32 gigs of ram and two 2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor so this shouldn’t be an issue. The footage I am editing is in Apple Pro Res 4.2.2 1920-1080 format. The video on track one was at 60 frames per second conformed to 24 frames so it is in slow motion. Don’t know if that makes a difference. Anyone have any advice? Thanks.

And that would be the problem. USB drives are not suitable for video editing. USB works by bursts of data and video requires constant data, especially where yu have 2 separate videos that are being played at the same time, the bursts of data just cannot keep up.

Your going to want to use a better type of connection for your media drive, like FireWire.

Really? Interesting. I always thought that USB and Firewire were the same speed. My USB drive has firewire as well so it should be a simple solution. Thanks for your help.

Like I said USB works via bursts of data and FW does constant streams of data. The peek of a USBs data stream may be similar to that of FW but again it its only going to be a burst, not constant.
