Please don’t flame me if this was a recent discussion point — I just found this forum. 🙂

I’m looking to build out a dual AMD box (Tyan motherboard). I’m looking to keep costs down.

Any one have a good recommendation for internal SATA drives/controller that comfortably supports 8bit SD video?

    Thanks! TR

the cheapest thing that will work well is a 2 port Firmtek SATA card in a 2 port Firmtek external enclosure, with 2 SATA drives (Hitachi, Seagate, Western Digital) – the size your choice. This will do 8 and 10 bit SDI and DVCProHD, no problems. Make sure you stripe the 2 drives together RAID 0 with Apple Disk Utility. 1 Terabyte will be under $1000, and of course, if you need less storage, it will cost less (the 250 Gig drives are pretty cheap these days).

Don’t cheap out with internal drives – the externals cause no heat issues, and let you swap out drives with no aggrivation. Everything is hot swap, like Firewire 800.

In WinXP? I gotta see this…

If the board you’re getting has ide & sata onboard (ie tyan2895)then four big drives striped on the four sata channels would be ok for 8bit SD…
…otherwise have a look at the Highpoint Rocketraid cards.

Thanks so much for the response!

You read my mind Andy — I’m currently looking at getting the following —

8 x 500 drives will be enough to give you HD as well…maybe even as a raid5 set.
