Video skipping at transitions
Posted by Greg Hughs on August 29, 2005 at 8:29 pmI am working on FCP 4.5 with a 24p sequence and am having problems when viewing my sequence. Whenever my video comes to a dissolve transition, the video skips at the beginning of the transition and at the end of the transition. Has anyone had this porblem? Any ideas on how to correct?
Thanks in advance.

August 29, 2005 at 9:18 pmThere is a function in FCP that is often overlooked… and it can help with many audio and video “skipping”, “sticking” and “missing” problems.
You should “Mixdown” the Audio for playback before you dub out of FCP, or during the edit, if you have audio/video stuttering, drop-outs or freezes.
NOTE: Mixdown has even been demonstrated to help with slipping, skipping problems (or “missing” audio clips) for files being EXPORTED as QT (or similar) files out of FCP.
First, SELECT ALL of your audio tracks (highlight them) on the timeline, then:
Sequence Menu > Render Only > Mixdown.
You should see a dialog box telling you its rendering.
It might seem to make little sense that “Mixing down” even simple audio tracks will “fix” complex video “freezes” or random audio dropouts to tape or export, but it CAN.
NOTE: It does not matter of you only have one audio track, if there are random freezes during output, you should try the Mixdown.

August 29, 2005 at 9:31 pmI tried the mixdown, but with no luck. I even took your idea a step further and made a duplicate sequence then deleted all the audio so it was a video-only composition. Still, I’ve got skipping problems. Any other ideas?

February 8, 2011 at 6:13 amI’m having the same problem–my video skips after I add a dissolve transition in Final Cut.
I’m shooting with a Canon T1i in 720 30p.
I too tried the mixdown with no improvements.
Any more ideas?

June 11, 2011 at 8:36 pmSame here. The footage is smooth with no transition and then skips in both clips after the transition is applied and rendered. Posted on the apple discussions as well…very frustrating.

June 11, 2012 at 9:05 pmYes, we have 3 macs which are doing this. Costing us huge money. I hope we find a solution. It even does it with cuts now.
