Video Size
Posted by Rip Swan on January 20, 2009 at 6:54 pmI have finished a project in FCP and made a DVD SP project. I burned the DVD and it played great on my computer and my brother’s, but when I put it in the TV, there was a little bit of the video cut off on all sides.
I tried messing with the zoom settings on the TV and everything and put the DVD in other TV’s but it still does the same thing. Is there a way to, i guess, zoom out the video or something? Or do you have any other ideas?

Yep, that’s why there is Safe Title and Action Safe areas. All TV’s cut off part of the image, up to 15% or more on all sides.
On the Computer you’re essentially seeing what’s known as “Underscan” which shows the entire image pixel for pixel.

January 20, 2009 at 11:08 pmYeah, that’s what I’ve heard.
How could I fix this problem because i know when I was using iDVD, way back when, I didn’t have a problem at all? Is their something in FCP or DVD SP I can do because it would knida suck if that’s just the way it is?

January 20, 2009 at 11:30 pmYou can increase the scale slightly, pan it etc. All in the motions tab. Try nesting the clips first… faster than applying the attributes to every clip independently.

It’s not a problem. It is how television works. You just make sure all your text and primary action stays within Title and Action Safe.

January 21, 2009 at 3:08 amI just don’t get why I didn’t have this problem before and am having it now. It seems kand of stupid to have to move everything in my project around to fit a TV.

Welcome to video production. This is how it works. This is how it has worked for the 19+ years I’ve been in the industry and for a long time prior to that.
Be thankful that today’s TVs display much more image than they did in the past. 1080p screens can display pixel for pixel in many cases so you can pretty much get your entire image on the screen if that image is coming right off a BluRay player.
No clue why it “worked” before but it never should have. You cannot see a pixel for pixel display on pretty much all TVs in the world just due to the nature of how they work. They all cut off the edges of the image.
