Video Scopes in a 3D project
Posted by Stefano Sarzi madidini on June 29, 2011 at 2:00 pmHello,
I’ve noticed that when I’m in a 3D project the video scopes shows me only the right channel.
For instance if I apply a color correction I see the results in scopes only for the right channel.
This is a problem when color correcting to match the 2 cameras in a mirror rig shot.Any suggestion??
P.S.
I hope that in next Vegas version 3D funcionalities will be largely implemented, there is a lot of missing features and bugs related to stereoscopy…..Thank you
Stefano

June 30, 2011 at 2:46 pmI’ve noticed the same problem. I’m thinking that changing the display type to left only or right only, when doing your color correction pass. I haven’t tested this yet though.

I agree – it’s a pain. So is the fact that you can’t apply Pan/Crop Left and Right individually, which would make it easy to create a floating window. Have you got an easy solution to make a 3D floating window?
To return to your problem – I also have a mirror rig and solve the colour balance problem in this way. First: I always do a white balance adjust on both cameras before shooting – this compensates quite a bit for one camera shooting through the mirror. Second: When adjusting the balance between Left Right images with the colour corrector I set the Preview window to left/right (half), full resolution and as large as possible. Then I run the colour corrector ONLY on the image that was shot through the glass while watching the result in the preview window – when it’s right I save it as a preset “Mirror rig correction”
I found it best to do this by shooting some footage of a test card that I printed with grayscale and all primary and secondary colours and making the colour adjustments with this.
Hope this helps!
O.T. Have you burnt a BluRay 3D from the timeline yet? I have a big problem with this – loses S3D adjustment at transitions between clips.

July 3, 2011 at 10:10 amHello Michael,
thanks for your suggestions; this is the way I work too, but scopes for both eyes would be a big help…
but… I think Vegas 10.0d is too unstable when working in 3D!!
Sony claims compatibility with Cineform codecs, but when I work with it there a lot of strange things happen;
-a lot of time the preview of a channel (or both ) became black and I have to restart Vegas to fix it,
-If I apply a Media FX on Cineform clips playback is totally screwed up, but it’s OK if I apply the same effect on event instead of media…
– If I copy and paste a cineform event from another project with an event fx Vegas crash everytime, if I delete the fx it’s OKplus
No nesting possibilities in 3D, no way to “un-pair” stereoscopic subclips for a further sync adjustment, a lot of crash any time I work with 3d adjustment plug in, multicam editing is not so crash free too…
I think Vegas has the best 3D workflow compared to other NLEs (I think that the possibility to apply any effect only in left or right or both is fantastic), but I’m seriously thinking about a switch to Premiere because of the feeling I have of “half baked” features…
What is your workflow? Do you use Cineform as DI for 3D?
Yes, I’ve made a 3D BR of a 5 min. trailer, but there was no transitions at all, the 3D ajustments seems to be OK.
Thank you
Stefano

July 3, 2011 at 7:57 pmHi again Stefano
Yes I use Cineform as intermediate – but have not experienced problems with this (yet!!).
Don’t give up on Vegas – report your problems to Sony Tech support. If you have a repeatable crash and you can provide them with as much info as possible I have found them to be very helpful. The issue with FX on Media and Event is something they are working on and if you report it too it may make a difference.
They promote the 3D editing heavily and I assume that they want to get it right – we can help them to do that.
Best wishes ‘H’
