  • Video saturated but looks right when playing in source window — possiblely Cineform?

Posted by Mike Behrens on January 5, 2008 at 2:21 pm

My video in the Source Monitor and the Project Monitor appear light or a little bit saturated until I play the clip. Then it looks right with deeper colors.

Rendered video looks great too, but this makes it hard to color correct and add effects.

I have a Canon HG10 (1440×1080)and the clips are converted to Cineform CODEC.

Is this a Cineform problem, or am I doing something wrong with Premiere?

color correction should be done on a properly corrected external monitor.

    Thanks Harm.

I understand the value of a properly calibrated monitor, but what is happening here is that the video, while still, looks more faded relative to when it is playing back. Even if my monitor calibration is off, this relative difference in color would still be happening.

This is a well known Cineform issue with Aspect HD. It has been improved in recent versions, but still exists to varying degrees depending on which Cineform version you are using, (There is a new updates as of yesterday actually), and mostly depending on which video card and settings you are using in terms of overlays. etc. Cineform has their official support forum on another online digital video forum which has many threads that describes this in great detail and the steps you can take to minimize the color shift.

    Thanks, Jim.

That affirms one of my two suspicions. I will upgrade and communicate with their tech support via the other forum site regarding specifics.

I didn’t think to patch it because I once had a similar problem with my final output to Quicktime.

NVIDIA display cards are typically where this issue is seen most obviously.

It’s a gamma issue and in the settings for the card, often it’s adjustable. I believe that CineForm has some data on their website about it…
