2. What is the actual resolution of HDV?
3. I have read in a few locations that current HDV from cams like the HVX-200 are not really HD because there is so much compression. If so, what is the actual resolution of video shot from the HVX?Thanks.

All video is 72DPI.
Frame size of SD 720×486 (Broadcast 601) or 720×480 (Broacast DV and DV50)
Data Rate Uncompressed 27MB/sec
Data Rate DV 5.1 MB/dec (about 5:1 compressionHD
All video is 72DPI.
Frame sizes are2K
1920×1080 (FULL FRAME HD)
1440×1080 (HDV AND HDCAM)
1280×720 (Varicam, HDX200)Data rates
165MB/sec UNcompressed
HDV 5.1 MB/sec (20:1)
HDCAM (55MB/sec (3:1)
Varicam, HVX (7.8 mb/sec)#2 Who cares. this is the worst format on earth!
Just because the Letter H and the Letter D are put together this does not mean that you are dealing with HD. I would not consider HDV a high def professional format, but it is prosumer.
I would consider panasonics codecs professional as they operate in teh 4:2:2 Color space.

480 lines of vertical resolution

Even if it looks like crap because of compression, it still has 720 or 1080 lines of vertical resolution and therefore is still HD. Compression and resolution are different.
Often, cameras shoot fewer horizontal lines then stretch them out on playback to fill the HD horizontal lines specs. DVCPROHD 720P has 720 vertical lines and 960 horizontal lines, but on playback, the horizontal lines are streched to fill 1280 lines instead of 960.
HDV cameras do the same. A 1080i HDV camera shoots 1440×1080 then stretches the 1440 to 1920 on playback. It’s my understanding that even highend DVCPROHD and HDCAM strech the horizontal pixels on playback.
