I am producing a video in after effects for an art installation that will be projected onto a physical work of art. I want to project just text and some graphics onto the installation, with the negative space between remaining transparent. In other words, I’d like the physical artwork to serve as the background for the video projection. Is this something I can control in after effects, or is it dependent on the projector (and if so what do I need in a projector)

    Thanks,

    Think about it.

If the video were all white, then the installation would be bathed in white light. If the video were all black, then you wouldn’t see the installation. It would be as dark as the rest of the room.

In other words, where the video is white, you see the installation. Where it is black, you do not. Where the video is coloured, the installation is tinted. So the negative space would not be transparent, it would be white if you want to see the installation there, black if you don’t.

Check out the From Russia With Love titles on YouTube. They used a projector and an auxiliary light.

Apologies Steve, but a small correction –

If the video were all black, one would see the installation but it would be a dim view unless the installation has some other lighting on it. Video black via projection is not pure black as we know it. Being a data signal to the projector, it is medium to dark grey depending on the contrast ratio of the projector, the brightness setting, and the bulb’s lumens. DLP projectors reputedly have a better contrast ratio, and therefore better black, than LCD projectors. 35mm photographic flim slides on Kodak lith film (if still available) would give a pure black since it is not a video signal but a light blocker in the black areas.

Ah, of course — thanks, Thomas.
