I did not know where else to post this question and I am editing in CS5 so I put it here. Please tell me what the problem is with the attached video. It was recorded on mini dv tape using a vx2000 camera. It looks like the first 9 minutes or so of the tape is almost unusable.

    Is it the tape?
    or a camera malfunction?

Hmm, it doesn’t look like the video attached properly.

First of all, does the problem occur when playing the tape back in-camera?

Yes it does. While recording there is no clue at all that there is a problem. Actually, let me correct myself. Sometimes the problem is bad enough to where when I start and stop (pause) recording that the timecode will start over to zero again. When that happens I know there is going to be a problem but most of the time there is no warning at all. Then when I get home I find the bad video.

Answer some questions to yourself to isolate the problem’s source.

Does it happen with tapes from other cameras?

Does it only happen when capturing in Premiere, or can I capture successfully with another editing program, like Windows MovieMaker if on a PC or iMovie on a Mac?

Are my firewire drivers up to date?

If capturing via firewire that is built in to the motherboard, can I possibly add a firewire card and capture with it?

Is there a firmware update for my Sony camera?

You indicate that the timecode reset only happens intermittently, indicating that it’s probably not a function of a setting in your camera, but probably an error occurring. Might want to consult a Sony camera forum or tech support.
