Video preview with Sony DSR-11 and black levels
I know the Sony DSR-11 does not offer the option to add setup to the analog output. Does this mean that when I use the deck as the video preview through firewire from FCP that all the black I see on my JCV production monitor will be too low and incorrect? If so, what are the (cost-effective) options to get accurate video preview from FCP?

Hi Jamie,
You have to care about the video set-up level if you go to print to analog, If you keep in digital you don’t have to worry about. Just make sure that your external monitor is well calibrated. If looks correct in your monitor will look well in any other monitor properly calibrated. And keep your signal Broadcast legal.

The deck will display the levels exactly as they are playing out of FCP. If you need to add setup, then you need to do so using the color correction tools available in FCP.

Adding fake setup inside FCP is not just technically the wrong place to do it, but will lower image quality.
There’s no need at all to add setup for monitoring on a monitor that’s correctly calibrated to your NLE. None at all. After all, the Japanese who wisely ditched setup (almost, but not quite, makes up for their love of interlace – yuck) and they can monitor stuff accurately.
Digital video, of course, never has, never should have and never needs to have any setup added. If you add it, faking it in FCP, all you are doing is making your digital files incompatible with the rest of the world, and lowering quality into the bargain.
If you need to add setup, add it in the analogue domain, as it’s purely an analogue phenonmena.

Not only will it be fake, but how can you know if you add the right amount of setup without a hardware waveform monitor. The scope in FCP does not show 7.5 IRE.

Sure it does, there’s even a tick mark at 7.5. The scopes show from 0 to 100.
