  • Video plays pixilated on HDTV. Please help.

I use the XH-A1, Premier Pro and Encore to create DVDs. The footage looks fine while editing in PP and when playing back on the computer or a standard definition television. I recently got a 23″ HD TV (thanks Santa) and when I played one of my DVDs (expecting to see more of the HD experience), I was extremely disappointed in the quality. The video plays extremely pixilated. I am sure it is operator error and if anyone could offer guidance on where I have gone wrong I would truly appreciate it. I have been through other posts and not seen my actual issue.

I have recorded footage on XH-A1 with the following settings:

    Signal Std – HD
    Frame Rate – 60i
    Comp Out – 1080i/480i

I have captured footage in Premier Pro with the following settings:

    DV-NTSC Widescreen 48Hz 29.97 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio – D1/DV NTSC Widescreen 16:9
    Fields – Lower Field First
    Display Format – 30 fps Drop-frame timecode

    Capture Format – DV Capture

I export to Encore with the following settings:

    Format – MPEG2-DVD
Present – NTSC Widescreen Medium Quality
    Basic Video Settings
    Quality – 3
    TV Standard – NTSC
    Frame Rate – 29.97
    Field Order – Lower
Pixel Aspect Ratio – Widescreen 16:9
    Bitrate Settings
Bitrate Encoding – VBR, 1 Pass
    Minimum/Target/Maximum Bitrate – 1.5/4/7

I appreciate your taking the time to read the above and look forward to any messages that may help me correct my problem.

    Thanks.

thats pretty normal to see on an HDTV

when youve transcoded your video in encore it downscales it to standard def
which looks fine on a normal SD telly,
also considering youve selected medium quality, its not going to upscale and still present well on an HDTV

considering SD is 720×576 and a 1080i HD TV generally upscales to 1920×1080, your gonna end up with a fairly pixelated image.

it is possible on most TVs to choose your resolution when watching a SD DVD, but when you do that it generally doesnt fill the whole frame, leaving a smaller picture in the centre of the screen surrounded by a lot of black
