video playback with finalcut to hd monitor
Posted by Kyle Couture on September 11, 2008 at 9:39 pmHi, I bought a new macbook pro and I want to view my finalcut timeline in fullscreen on my hd tv, i used to do this through s video on my old powerbook and it worked fine just not that great of quality. On the new macbook there is no s video so i bought a dvi to hdmi cord this does not show up when i go down to view, video playback or in any of the playback settings any idea why this wont work the same as s video?

With the TV connected by HDMI you need to open the Display Preference an click “Detect Displays”.

September 13, 2008 at 1:35 amIn View> Video PlayBack, select the second option: “Digital Cinema Desktop Preview”.
NO the first one ( “Digital Cinema Desktop Preview MAIN”).
Then click Com+F12, and you will have your TV full screen for editing.
In Screen Preferences set “Number of Recent Items: 5.

September 16, 2008 at 3:11 amHi Kile,
What do you get when you plug your TV to your Mac?
You have Mirroring turned off, don’t you?

September 16, 2008 at 3:50 pmHi Kyle,
Right , in the Screen Preferences you need to turn Mirroring OFF, but in FC Audio?Video Preffs> A/V Device, set Mirror ON.
Also set “Recent items: 10”.
I have it like that now an is working. You should get more options in the External video in FC.

May 12, 2009 at 8:33 pmI noticed someone mentioned that you needed an MXO for this. We have an old Power Mac G5 that we’d like to plug into a 42″ plasma. Is it as simple as using a DVI to HDMI cable and running it off your FCP timeline? Or would it only work as a second display with mirroring or dual display type function?
We’d ideally like to color correct it and use it as a playback monitor. Do we need the Matrox MXO or can we just get one of those cables?
Thanks.
