  • Video playback question.

Posted by Gerry Bayne on May 5, 2010 at 5:48 pm

Here are the specs to my machine:
    Dell Studio XPS 435T
    Intel Core i7 CPU
    12GB RAM
    64-bit
    NVIDIA VeForce GTS 240

My video playback isn’t happening. It chugs along so choppy and slow that it’s untenable.

My processor is being taxed only at about 20%.

I’m using draft-quality on the monitoring.

Is the graphics card bottle-necking the video?

Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.

I cannot figure out why I’m not getting smooth video!

    Thanks,
    Gerry

I figured out something. Very interesting.

When I had used Vegas before getting Premiere, it couldn’t handle AVCHD files, so I had to render them down to AVI or QT.

I figured it might be the same here, so I loaded up an AVI file which played terribly (as mentioned in my original post) but when I loaded an AVCHD file, it played perfect.

Not sure why but it works.

    Hi Gerry,

A couple of important questions –

    1) What Premiere Project Preset are you using?

    2) What is the format of the video clips – uncompressed, AVCHD, XDCAM, what? Source of the video?

If video clips are uncompressed, don’t expect realtime playback, the hard drive(s) may not be able to keep up with data rate.
