  • Video Playback Out of Sync, Unless Start 1 Sec into Clip

    Hey Everyone,

I am working on my first project in HD… what a wonderful world it is! I do have one problem that I figure is a result of my ignorance in the HD world, allow me to explain…

I captured clips shot on the CineAlta on HDCAM 1080i23.98PsF into the Kona2 capturing at DVCProHD codec 29.97 1080i (the pulldown was done inside the Sony J-H3 HDCAM deck). Everything captured just fine and dandy and when I checked playback right after it all seemed great. However, when we started editing, we noticed that when we hit play in a clip or the timeline, the video pauses for a couple frames, then jumps about a second into the clip and starts playing along with the audio (which starts at the beginning of the clip). i.e. the video is a second ahead of the audio. This is only out of sync on the external monitor, the video on the computer screen is synced to the audio playback.

I am playing the video out of FCP 4.5 at 1080i 8bit 29.97 and using the letterbox and 4:3 downconverts to 525i29.97 SD playback in the control panel. I am playing the audio out of the Kona2 or the internal audio and both are the same. In terms of a black burst generator, I have a ref signal going into the Kona2 which is listed at 525i29.97. I’ve tried using that as sync, or freerun or sending a signal from the HD deck at 1080i29.97, but none of those options seem to make any difference.

The wierd thing is that if I start the playback 22 frames or later into the clip, sync is not an issue on either the external or computer monitor!?!? This leads me to think that this has something to do with the pulldown out of the deck to convert from 23.98 timecode to 29.97 timecode, and/or the latency of the sync-ing.

Anyone have any experience with anything like this or know if and how this can be corrected. Any help would be great appreciated!!
