    Hi,

Admittedly I am new to Adobe Premiere, and online editing in general. I have a DV cam and imported video and tried to edit, however, a 2 minute video clip (which is 42MB :-/) won’t play in my Monitor window. Actually to be clear it will play, but if I pause it, or FFWD it is then frozen and no longer plays. If I import the video at a lower quality it works & edits ok.

My question is somewhat twofold. Do I not have enough RAM or good enough video card? And if not, is it possible to upgrade & still posibly be effective. My PC is only 1 1/2 years old, still pretty new, uses XP. The reason I ask is my ultimate goal is to tape & edit low end pro video (wedding etc). So I’d like to be able to use my home computer, yet I also want to shoot & import/export at the highest qualities as well.

If anyone has any feedback as to if I’m doing something wrong or if the video size is wayyyy to big to begin with that’d be great. Again, somehow it’s only 2 minutes, but 42MB. Shot on a Canon GL2.

    Thanks,

A 1 year old computer should be able to run Premiere, but you should post your system specs. You can go to Start>Run then type MSCONFIG

Go to the start up tab and uncheck everything, then restart. Note that it may disable your antivirus and other startup programs. It’s easy to go back and recheck if needed.

Ultimately, Premiere should be on a dedicated computer or you will probably have to deal with crashes.

As far as size, DV takes about 11 GB per hour, which by today’s hard disk standards is not much.

    Cheers,

Thanks, I meant to include the specs in my initial post. It has 1 GB of RAM, and the hard drive is about 80 or 100GB.

11 GB per hour may not be much, but do you think a PC of this size should be able to zip around and FFWD & RWD with that size a file?

I’ll try the reboot thing you mentioned, although I don’t think it’s really virus related, it works plenty fine otherwise, and with smaller, average quality imported files. Maybe I should designate a PC or drive for this kind of work.

On XP, you will probably need a minimum of 2GB to run things smoothly in DV, the more complex the project, the worse it gets. Also, 2 HD are recommended one for the OS, and one for your media, so it may be a good time to invest in a new drive, internal or eSATA (card needed), not USB.

A near full drive also runs many folds slower than an empty one, keep that in mind.

And you have the issue of the CPU, which is really running the show.

I wouldn’t sink a lot of money in upgrading this machine though, since there are probably many component that are bottlenecking the system, including the motherboard itself.

You would be better off either building a new one, or
getting something in the Core2Duo range.
