I’ve recorded video for years (VHS, 8MM) but have never done much more than watch the results. I now want to begin to transfer these to digital. I’ve built a new PC (Athlon 64 3700+, MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum MB, 1GB Ram, Nvidea GeForce 6600GT video and dual DVD Dual layer burners) with the idea of learning to edit video (Vegas 6.0). I’ve also purchased a VHS/DVD Burner (Panasonic DMR-ES40V) to transfer VHS to DVD. I already had an 8 mm player that can cable to the ES40V to transfer 8mm to DVD. Finally I have a new video recorder (Panasonic PV-GS120) so new video will be recorded in miniDV format.

I begin by burning a DVD from a VHS tape. Exploring the disk I see Video_RM and Video_TS folders. What are these and what are the files within? By trial and error I discover the video appears to be a files with a .vob extension, although there are actually 5 of these in the video_ts folder all with the same size. Although most dvd software can read these files, Vegas can’t open them directly. Further trial and error found that dvd ripper software can convert .vob to .avi that can be read by Vegas.

This all seems pretty cumbersome….am I making this more difficult than it needs to be? What’s with all these different extensions and formats. Is there a recommended path that’s shorter than the one I’m walking? Any resources to speed my learning curve?

    THANKS in advance.

You should consider the Mpeg2 format used to make DVDs the LAST stop in your post-production work. This format is highly compressed and will not stand up well to another round of compression.

.vob files are the mpeg2 files that are combined with the audio information.

    rcrete,

You do not want to rip VHS to DVD for input to vegas or any NLE…
if you don’t have anyway to dub analog to digital tape… buy a analog capture card or break out box…

DVD mpeg2 footage is far less then ideal for editing…
