video losing sharpness/becoming blurry when adding to timeline
Whenever I add video to the timeline is will immediatly lose alot of sharpness and make the video look alittle out of focus/blurry. I have used neoscene to convert the files that I have to avi’s. When I am viewing the avi file in the trimmer window and watching the preview screen (to see what section of video that I want to use) it is perfectly sharp and just as sharp as the original camera footage. As soon as I drag the clip to the timeline and the video changes in the preview window to show what is in the timeline that is where the video is blurry. Why is it doing that? I even tried to render some of the project and see if it cleared up but it stayed the same. Any help would be great. I don’t want to have to go through every clip and add sharpness. Even when I go back and click on video from trimmer window and go back and forth from trimmer to timeline video you can see the difference in the preview window.

You neglected to say what setting your preview window is using. It is usually set to a lower resolution to reduce the load on the CPU while viewing video on the timeline which may have several video layers. Resolution in a rendered file depends on the bit rate used by the render.

Check that your project properties has the correct frame size – you may have selected an incorrect small frame size, which will result in small or blurry preview and maybe also small output renders.
Also make sure you haven’t mistakenly added a blur track effect (or even master effect) – that will cause all video events on the track (or all tracks in the case of Master) to be blurry.

ok the preview window is on best full and I got the project properties by clicking on the match media folder in the new project window. The media that I clicked on to get the properties is the same file (avi) that I will be using in the project. Should I have manually put the properties in? I checked to make sure they matched my video source and it does. There are no accidental fx turned on. So what could be the problem? Why would it look different viewing it from the trimmer window vs the timeline? Is there a different process the video goes through to be played from the timeline instead of trimmer window? I hope I am making sense. The preview window is always on best full when viewing either in trimmer window or timeline. Why would the video degrade just by dragging onto timeline.

I am a Premiere Pro person and the monitor is at Best/Full all the time, however I did notice that in Vegas Platinum Studio 11 the definition in the monitor window changes occasionally when editing HD 1920 x 1080 and goes to half mode which degrades the video in comparison to the timeline which is always BEST. The processed video appears to be at broadcast resolution though, ie., to archival tape or Blu-ray disc.
I am impressed with the Sony product as the Image Stabilization effect and handling of AVCHD and H.264 clips is very fast.Freelance Imaging & Video

I’d not use the trimmer window, put the clip straight onto the timeline, and go from there ??????????? There should not be an issue there, but, i use a NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800, maybe the video card but, I doubt it.

Hi Donna, did you ever solve this mystery?
My issue is similar … crisp 1080 footage from a GH2 becomes noticeably soft when dropped on Vegas 10 timeline.
Project properties matched to clip. Preview quality at Best. When rendered to 1080 it exhibits the same softness as shown in the preview window.
I have not found other similar discussions elsewhere, so have resorted to posting in this old thread.
