I recently purchased the DVX100A camera and the DVX book. I finished the video that came with the book and have been reading the book so I am getting a much better understanding of the camera settings. Both great resources, by the way!

I am in the middle of a project and I am not sure why my video looks so washed out. We are having a new pond installed – going from 1200 gallons to 3,000 gallons. I have set the DVX in my upstairs bedroom window facing the pond project. The camera is equipped with a circular polarizing filter so we can see into the water. Since the project has been going on for days, the first thing I do each morning is set up the auto white balance by hitting the Auto on the side of the camera until the A shows up on my LCD screen. The camera is set to shoot 1.5 seconds of video every 5 minutes while the work is being done on the pond. When looking at the video through the viewfinder and/or LCD screen, the video looks nicely saturated. However, when I play it back on our widscreen TV from the camcorder, the video is flat and washed out. I am shooting in 60i mode.

Another question, when choosing format and considering delivery will be on DVD, are we better off to shoot 16:9 squeeze since we have a 16:9 format TV or 4:3 so we do not lose data? From what I read in the book, we are losing 25% of our data in the sqeeze mode whereby if we shot in letterbox, I would guess we would be losing even more.

Sorry for such a long post! I just have so much to learn.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to read and respond.

Shoot with the monitor so you can see what you’re getting. The LCD is not designed for color accuracy. Also you do not need to redo white balance everyday.

    Noah –

Thank you for getting back to me. What do you mean by “shoot with the monitor”. Are you referring to the viewfinder?

No I mean attach the camera to a proper monitor- for example the widescreen one you mentioned. The onboard viewfinder and LCD are designed for camera status and framing not critical color and exposure adjustment.
