This would look better with 3D layers. Assuming both layers have the same dimensions, you would select either layer and:
1) set its y-axis for orientation to 180 degrees
2) set its x-scale value to -100% (ensure that you first deselect the constraint proportions checkbox
3) set its z-position to -1 (could be any value <0 and >-1)
4) then make the other layer a child to this layer.

Once you’ve done this, it’s a matter of animating the parent layer in 3D space.

Sorry, I didn’t understand your reply. I was hoping to get something like, “use particle playground, set the background image to the movie, etc.”

If you want lots of snowflakes then just use the recipe I provided in th earlier post to create a single snowflake. Then use it as a Layer Map for Particle Playground.

You’ll want to create the layer map precomp only as big as you need them when used with PP. Too big and it’ll become a memory hog. If things run slow, you’ll want to create a property mapper to act as a particle killer. Perform a search here at the COW on how to create a particle killer map.

I played around with it last night and got pretty close to what I wanted. Unfortunately the resulting effect didn’t look like I wanted. This is mainly because the video is of a person spinning on a saucer. When the snowflake spins, you don’t get that the person is spinning inside of the snowflake.

Also, I couldn’t get particle world to have as few flakes as I’d like. I guess that 4-5 non-spinning flakes would be a much nicer effect.

Is there some kind of math formula that would give a single flake a random, snowflake like path? If I had this, I could apply it to 4-5 of my own flakes and not use particle world.

I’ve never used equations in AE, so if your answer could include how to do that, that would be much appreciated.

For 4 layers, it’s quite easy to create a motion path for each layer. You don’t really need a random or a wiggle to do it, especially since you hvaen’t delved into it just yet.
