Video freezes within After Effects
Posted by Charleen Raymond on December 20, 2008 at 8:25 pmPLEASE HELP!
.mov & .avi files repeatedly freeze within the timeline at random times. Tried to purge all, this seemed to unfreeze effected layers until I scrub again, then it just freezes in different places. Tried reloading imports, deleting and re-importing but still freezes at the exact same place. It’s just as bad rendered.
This seems to mainly happen when I overlap layers using a blending mode.
OS: Mac os v10.5.5
RAM: 2gbGOD! My hair is falling out.

December 24, 2008 at 11:00 pmDave, I see your posts all over the place, I’m sure you’ve got a lot of knowledge. I am having the same trouble as Charleen. My clips are nested in a composition that has motion. The composition is a 3D layer. When I scrub the timeline of the main comp, the motion of the composition itself works like it’s supposed to, but the nested clips act like freeze frames. This happens when I render as well. I can go inside the clips and scrub and they still act like freeze frames. When I PURGE ALL the motion in the clip will scrub like it’s supposed to but if I scrub the composition that holds the clips, they are frozen again.
I’ve tested the heck out of this. It doesn’t matter if it’s one clip or many. I don’t think it’s a memory/processor issue because this same thing happened to me once before when I was working with DV (I am currently working with DVCPRO HD 1080 30). I’m on a dual 2.5 G5, using CS3 Professional 8.0.0. My system is 10.5.5, using Quicktime 7.5.5.
I have tried PURGE ALL, I’ve made sure my max RAM cache isn’t too low (60%). I tried increasing it; that didn’t work. I went into MEMORY AND CACHE and clicked CLEAN DATABASE AND CACHE. I turned off open GL, turned on Adaptive resolution. Nothing works.
I see your post about the “continuous updating button” but I don’t know what you’re referring to. Anybody? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

December 27, 2008 at 7:09 pmAlthough I wasn’t able to ‘solve’ the problem I was able to work around it, however it took all night.
Because it only stops on individual layers I figured there would be less chance of it stopping if I had less layers, in the end I had to render my comp 4 layers at a time and import the avi file back into the comp so that 4 layers became one. After doing this enough times (LONG) and purging a lot it finally started cooperating and I was able to render my final project flawlessly.
If anyone has a quicker way please post it, PLEASE, I’ve been around and no one seems to have the definitive solution for this dumbarse problem.

December 29, 2008 at 12:52 amThanks Charleen. I did something very similar as a workaround. It took longer and isn’t exactly what I wanted to do but it got me through for now. I too will be looking forward to an explanation or fix to this annoying problem.

May 27, 2009 at 9:46 amHaving the same problem…does anyone have a fix. Working on G4 dual 2gig memory AECS3! This is unbelievable. Could it be a problem with QT 7.41? When i update to QT7.6 it hinders my NLE system…all help appreciated!

May 27, 2009 at 4:41 pmjai, i have since upgraded to a new mac. i never found the reason for that behavior and, as you can see by the length of the thread, nobody else has either. i haven’t tried rendering out those files that were giving me so much trouble, but i don’t think i will have the same issue as i’m running cs4 on a new mac. the only thing that did work for me was cutting down the number of layers. have you tried that?

May 27, 2009 at 5:13 pmThanks greg & congrads on the new system (my budget won’t allow 4 that right now) i’ve added new memory & I’ve cut the layers down to 4 or less…again 2 no avail! I’m just wondering if it’s a problem with quicktime or AE? Heck I even reinstalled after effects! Thanks again for your support…itks nice to know it’s not an isolated case…ther has 2 B an answer somewhere!! (Bsides a new system), my project is just a 4 second came fly by of 3 video files on a DJ animated background!

May 27, 2009 at 5:42 pmmy guess is quicktime. the boards all over the net are filled with people who have had all kinds of unexplainable things happen the moment they installed the update. i installed the new QT update shortly before i had this particular issue. i can’t say with certainty that it was causing the problem because i hadn’t been working on this AE file prior to the update, but it caused other problems for me. the problem with QT is it is almost impossible to downgrade to a previous version.
a four second shot? how frustrating. if you want to send me your files i can give it a run on my system… shouldn’t take too much time.
