Video format for good preview performance?
Which is the best format to use in order to increase the preview performance? I’m planning temporarily using a file format that will give higher preview performance and then replace the files with the original when I export it.
DV, Cineform, Sony 4:2:2 YUV or something else?I have been using a lot of effects and it’s hard to get everything perfect when the playback is shoppy and low resolution.

This is what VASST GearShift allows you to do quite easily. It will create DV Widescreen proxies which should edit very smoothly and then allows you to swap your HD footage back in at any time to check o how it looks or for the final render. You can switch back and forth at any time at the press of a button.
Another option is to use CineForm NeoScene. CineForm is not a proxy, it is a digital intermediary. If you use CineForm you would never swap back to your original files because the CineForm files are of the same quality; they just use a codec that is more efficient at playback then the highly compressed formats used by today’s cameras.
Both have a free trial so that you can see which one fits your workflow better.

I would use DV proxies. You can try Proxy Media Builder. It has free 30 day trial

Proxies are lower quality substitutes for the actual media. They are used for computers that can’t handle the source media but you still need to swap the source media back to render. Intermediaries are full quality replacements for the actual media. They usually use a codec that is easier to edit than the original source but require more processing power than proxies. No swapping is required because you can render right from the intermediaries.

If your computer is not powerful enough to edit the digital intermediaries then you have no choice, you must use proxies. If your computer can handle both, then it’s a personal preference that’s up to you. Proxies are usually smaller than intermediaries so if storage is a concern you might want to use proxies. The choice is yours.
