In a previous post, I queried about the widescreen DVD format and learned that it is not a widescreen aspect ratio itself, but the pixels are shaped differently.

I am creating a video which I’d like to be shared on Vimeo in widescreen HD, but also output to DVD in widescreen format. Is it possible to do this with a single project? In each, the project setup (aspect ratio) is setup differently before editing. So I wonder if you can effectively render to both formats from a single project.

    Yes.

Yes you can render both from a single veg file. The render/encode setting overrides the project setting. So if you tell it to render to a 1.333 aspect ratio and your original footage was 1.000 it will do so without qualm as the render settings supersede the project settings.

A good way though to test this for yourself is to make a 30 second selection on the timeline and render that section out to both HD widescreen for Vimeo and for DVD and take a look at the results.

what would be the best initial project settings for this? What I’m confused by is the difference in aspect ratios between the two formats. If you render 16X9 for HD video at Vimeo, but the DVD is rendered in 1.33 letterbox (right?), then does the HD widescreen render automatically chop off the top and bottom of the frame to create the aspect ratio?

Were you able to render out about a 30 second segment for both to look at for yourself? Give it a go and see if you can spot any differences.

No, I am investigating this issue before I begin so I know the best project settings to start the cut. It was my understanding that it is best to start with ideal project settings, rather than change them later after you’ve begun editing. I’m not sure why this is, but hence my question. Since there are two different renders here, I am confused by the best overall project settings.

The best project settings would be the one that most closely (or exactly) matches your original footage.

However, I would encourage you to just do a little test with 30 seconds or less footage output to both HD and SD.

OK, I have finished my cut. The project is in HD 1280×720. I would like to know how to render this for widescreen DVD. I assume that I will have to work with the pixel aspect ratio, but honestly this stuff kinda confused me. If I render as regular NTSC DVD, I get a 640×480 image that is letterboxed. I would like DVD players to recognize this as true widescreen, so I can avoid having it playback letterboxed inside a 1.33 frame. How do I best accomplish this?

    Thanks much for assistance.
