  • Video File Names Lost when capturing audio and video to seperate scratch disks

Posted by Aaron Metchik on October 2, 2007 at 1:06 am

I recently used the “Capture vdeo and audio to different files” setting under system settings.

FCP is supposed to name the video and audio files the same root name such as “clip 1”, then follow each with an underscore, and then _a for audio or _v for video.

For some reason, my project has kept track of all of my audio files, but all of my video files are offline. Worse, final cut pro doesn’t even seem to have the names of the video files recorded, even though they are supposed to be the same as the audio files, but with a _v after them.

When I try to reconnect media, and look for my offline clips, FCP doesn’t even have a list of clip names for me to recapture, it just indicates the hard drive that the missing clips are on. I have not touched or renamed any clips since I used the automatic process of capture now,

Any ideas on what’s going on and why my video files aren’t being remembered?

Why are capturing as separate audio and video files? This is not a recommended technique. Other NLEs may do it this way, but not Final Cut Pro.

Hi David. I have to admit I am kind of new to this. I was told to use that option, which is under system settings, by a post sup I hired as consultant. Supposedly it would ease the burden on the disk with all the video on it and easily allow me to get rid of the reference audio on the tape once3 I captured the audio from the Dat. Does that workflow have known issues? Should I definitely have done it the other way?

    Hi Aaron,

Well, this does explain your logic, and it certainly is understandable that you might want to discard unnecessary video when your desire is really to capture and store only audio. And, while I have used similar techniques with other NLEs, I have not captured double-system audio with FCP, but I suspect that the problems you are encountering with seprate audio and video capture may not have an elegant solution.

My suggestion would be to capture that audio together with video as DV, which is just 13gb per hour, making certain to use the same framerate as the video you wish to sync with of course. I think you will find that despite having to store useless video files, this will make for fewer headaches.
