  • video events create new, unwanted audio track

    Hello All,

A quick question- looked everywhere but can’t find an answer. On a project with multiple video and audio tracks, I would like all audio events associated with video events to appear on the same track when I drag the the video file onto my timeline, and I would like that audio track to be lower down on my track list rather than directly below the video track.

Currently, every time I drag a video file onto the timeline to create a video event, Vegas Pro 11 creates a new audio track directly below the preexisting video track for that video’s audio, despite the fact that other audio tracks are already in the project.

So, I am left with dragging the audio event to another track, then deleting the newly created, unwanted audio track- every time I create a new video event! Surely there is a way to avoid this?

    Many Thanks,
    James

You can load the media file into the trimmer, then right-click on the window and select Video Only, then Add Media from the trimmer.

I’ve mentioned this to Sony but they don’t see it as a problem. There’s nothing you can do about it. Vegas just dynamically keeps making new tracks wherever you drag things and has no concept of keeping them in any particular order.

Thanks to Mike and John for the replies. John, I am surprised Sony does not see this as a problem. With many tracks, and many events, it ends up wasting precious time, and can create confusion!

    Ah well…

I don’t see it as a problem. I would be more lost if the audio track was not under the new video track because I can easily have 4 or 8 tracks of audio. So, when I drag new media to the timeline, its audio track is immediately below it. Very predictable. If I want to move the audio track somewhere up or down the tracks list, it only takes a second or so to move it. But it’s under my control.

You have to understand that Vegas has no concept of a video track and audio track being linked! There is nothing in Vegas that says “this audio track is for this video track”. Audio tracks are video tracks and completely independent. So there is absolutely no way that Vegas could possibly know where you want the audio to be placed based solely on where you dropped the video. This is why it makes a new audio track if the very next track under the video is not already audio.

    John,

Yes, I suppose the only way Vegas sees a connection between any video and audio event is because they are made a group by default when dropped onto the timeline. Nothing at the track level whatsoever. I will just keep audio tracks below my video tracks, and make do. For the most part, I am not actually using much of the audio, so I can mute the track, collapse its height, and continue on.

    Thanks all for the help.
