video event layers and their own fx
First of all I’m new, so I apologize if I don’t use correct terminology. 🙂 Coming from Final Cut, it was so easy to add effects to different video events that were “layered” on top of others… I’m finding in Vegas 10, when I apply a border to a small tile of video, it adds it to the large clip in the background… not the small clip laying on top. Does this make sense? Wondering what I’m missing.

Proud to here that you made the switch from Final Cut….But after you
get over these Vegas learning Curves, you will enjoy your editing
so much more.
Now, if you want to add effects to a particular video, Simply drag
and drop it only on that particular video event. If you drop your
effects on the preview window, the effect will be applied to
everything or if you drop it on the video track (on the left),
it will be applied to everything in that track….Hope you follow.Steve Rhoden

Yes, definitely. Here’s the section. See the blue border (which isn’t on any of my events… not sure why it won’t go away 🙂 Initially I was trying to put borders on the video tiles (see the one on the lower left corner) but they will only apply to the main video in the background.

Yes, that’s what’s so frustrating… as that’s exactly what I did (and always do). But somehow the effects won’t apply to the video I want.

It has to be on one of the tracks. Mute one track at a time until it dissappears,then click on track motion for that track and resize and position it to fit the smaller event.

I know what track it’s on. At least the one where it’s supposed to be… that’s what’s so odd, it shows up on the preview screen and in the rendered product, but it’s not in the fx window at all… it’s so weird!

When you add the effect to an event, you will see a “Pan/Crop” entry with it. Drag it BEFORE the Pan/Crop and see if that does what you want.

Welcome to the Vegas community. It sounds like you need to add the FX PRE-Crop. If you look at the FX windiow, you’ll see PAN/CROP at the beginning of the FX chain. Just drag it to the end of the chain (to the right) so that the border gets added BEFORE you crop. Like this:
