I’ve used Final Cut for a couple years now, and am running FCP5 on my G5. For some odd reason, I have VTR control on my log and capture screen, but the preview is disabled, and I cannot capture video. When I try to change the settings on the Capture/Input, it says “Unable to locate capture device: DV Video. Your system configuration may have changed or your deck/camera may be disconnected or turned off…”

It shows in my Audio/Video settings under Capture Presets – WARNING: Video Device DV Video is missing.

I haven’t dealt with this problem before; I’ve tried restarting, rebooting, new cables, etc. I’m sure it’s something simple. Can someone help me out? It was working just fine a week ago.

This is exactly the same problem I am having… except that I’m using FCP 4.5 (HD). Just bought a new firewire cable – didn’t solve the problem.

    Hey Paul.

For what it’s worth, I just solved my problem – I had accidentally moved the NTSC/PAL switch to PAL. Machine control was working, but no video. Now, all’s well.

    Good luck.

    Paul,

While running FCPHD (v.4) I added 1GB of ram, updated to Tiger and encountered the same problem. Same symptoms as yours. Then I installed FCPStudio(5.0.1) hoping it would solve it. It has not.

Unfortunately, I did not inadvertently switch the machine to PAL as your other respondent had.

I’m stumped. (And frustrated.) Have you solved your problem?

    Pete

Hi, seems I’ve got the bug too! Got 4.5 HD on my Powerbook 800mhz/512mb. I work in PAL format. Been editing happily for years. Just finished project and deleted all capture material on ext. WD firewire drive. Launched FCP and got message saying: “Unable to locate the following external device: Apple Firewire Pal (720 x 576) Your systems config may have changed, or your deck/camera may be disconnected or turned off. Please check your connections and click “Check Again”, or click “Continue” to set external device selection to None.” I’ve deleted prefs, etc, I’ve tried connecting camera directly to int. HD, been thru disk utility repairs. I’ve noticed when I choose “Continue” my FCP takes a VERY long time to open and my Firewire HD is working to the max, something screwy there! Cannot log and capture. Help? Deadline!

Trashed FCP and reinstalled it. All working fine. Wish I knew what it was though.

Howdy, I realize this is an old post, so I might start a new thread, but I’ve experienced the same problem a couple times – you have deck control but no video during capture – and each time the following resolved it.

I just quit FCP, turned off our Sony DVCam deck, waited a couple seconds, turned it back on, and opened FCP. This fixed it, so evidently something gets off on the deck’s firewire bus or the computer’s.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem with the deck?

I have also tried quiting and “FCP Rescueing” (using the FCP Rescue software) FCP and when it came back up, it was experiencing the same problem during capture – deck control but no picture. The only thing that fixed it was rebooting the deck.
