Video comes out dark on export
Hi all:
I’ve got media encoder cs6. I’m compressing a .mov exported out of FCP. Original footage shot in DVCpro at 720 24p. When I drop the clip into encoder it immediately turns the video dark. It’s like it’s shifting the gamma. And it exports it dark. Here are the examples:
On the left is Media encoder and the right is the file that was exported out of FCP. You can see the video on the right is brighter just as the original footage. Now, what is interesting is that this happens no matter what file or codec or setting I use. It does it to EVERYTHING. I’ve tested it on my laptop which also has cs6 and the same thing.
Any thoughts as to preventing this/

This just looks like a gamma interpretation difference. You can change how Quicktime interprets gamma in the preferences area of Quicktime. I believe there’s a check box to enable a different gamma level, tied to Final Cut Studio if I remember right. (2.2 vs 1.8). Check and your problem should be solved.
Ultimately, Quicktime 7 (and X) is a bad way to proof check your work for color accuracy. It is a notoriously poor (and well documented) app for handling color. It’s best to have an outboard monitor being fed by some sort of SDI or HDMI monitoring card (Blackmagic Intensity Pro or Decklink card).

I HAVE THE SAME ISSUE AND IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH QUICKTIME. I HAVE A FULLY EXPORTED .MOV FILE, I CONVERT TO .MP4 IN MEDIA ENCODER, AND IT IS DARK. I CAN OPEN THEM SIDE BY SIDE IN QT, PREMIERE, VLC, WHATEVER PLAYER I LIKE…THE ORIGINAL IS BRIGHTER THAN THE CONVERSION. I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO SOLVE THIS FOR YEARS, BECAUSE I LIKE THE PROGRAM OTHERWISE.

Has anyone figured this out? I have the same issue. No matter what I import it’s darker than the original. The export is also dark.

No, I have not solved it, except to add a level filter to nested clip in premiere before exporting. I think it is h264 encoding…whether it’s an MP4 extension or an .mov extension same result…also, same result in squeeze…but in squeeze i can add a filter directly to offset it a bit. Not a perfect solution but it works. The stuff compressed by either program is destined for web only use, so quality is questionable at best. I would love to hear some more reactions and thoughts on this, likely someone will say I am crazy for doing it that way, but it’s the only solution I can devise…and for the web it’s more than fine. Get the job done and move on, if it looks right, it is right. The other issue I have is, as stated above, monitors…the same video on one monitor to the next will look different. My Apple monitor tends to have deep blacks, while my Acer is more washed out, me my dell is different yet. Apparently NTSC is still with us, if only as an amusing acronym.
