  • video codecs for premiere cs4 (pc)?

Posted by Sion Littledyke on March 23, 2010 at 2:49 pm

Hi, I’m struggling to get usable render results out of premiere cs4 at the moment. I can render decent flv + f4v files but all other formats have awful image quality (avi, quicktime, mpeg2, h.264, windows media)

I’m no expert and have tried tweaking some of the export settings, so it’s very much trial and error.

Aside from getting a mac does anyone have any good advice ?! Could the problem be my actual video codec? I’m currently using combined community codec pack (cccp).

Or does anyone have any export setting recommendations for premiere?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Sion,

The quality of the export depends highly on what the original video looks like. If you have a lot of movement (handheld), or noise, the compressor will have a hard time giving you good results.

At this point in time, most of our export are between 750 and 1000 kb/s

We use Sorenson squeeze, but H.264 or flv from Premiere should give you results that are close to that quality.

What are you comparing your quality to?

Keeping your settings the same throughout the process is the surest way of achieving best results.

I shoot 23.976fps, 1080p … and I edit with those same settings. I am very pleased with my results. Could this be a part of your problem?

    Hi thanks for replies.

Firstly the original image quality is ok – static indoor shots with studio lighting so not too much noise. I can actually render decent quality flv video files, it’s the other formats that are poor quality – quicktime, avi, h.264, windows media are all larger file sizes than the flv files but much worse image quality – not sure if it’s my export settings, or maybe my actual codec as previously mentioned (?)

There is a premiere sequence template for avchd 60 fps interlaced which is basically what my camcorders shoot. I’ve been using this preset which pretty much matches the raw video files as far as I’m aware. Thanks for the advice though
