  • Video Clip plays audio in VLC, not in PPro — ??

Posted by Eric Chard on July 27, 2022 at 5:00 am

I have a number of *.MOV files that will play in VLC, both audio and video, but not in PPro. So the audio is there, and the freeware can play it, but the commercial s/w does not.

Acting on a suggestion, I used MediaInfo to examine the file, but… not sure what to do with the info. Here’s the TEXT output from MediaInfo, thanks for any help:

Likely the deprecated QT MPEG4 codec. I’m assuming you are on a Mac. PP simply doesn’t play everything. VLC does (almost). You’ll need to convert. Since VLC can play it, you can probably convert with anything that uses FFMPEG for core conversion. You can convert with VLC but it’s a PITA. Presuming you want to convert to a pro format, like ProRes, I suggest FFWorks. In short, it’s a matter of finding an app that can read the file and convert to the format you want. Worst case, you’ll need Windows, Linux, or an old Mac (pre-deprecation) but chances are FFMPEG can handle it.

Thanks for your reply. I am >not< on a mac.

I believe “Shutter Encoder” will do the job: I tried to save from VLC, but the resulting file did not have the audio (which VLC will play from the original) attached. >:^(

If Shutter Encoder does work, try handbrake set to Production preset.

FFmpeg supports DM2 and QDMC, so you should be able to convert the music to a more common format such as AAC with the build-in conversion of VLC (VLC is FFmpeg-based).
