Video Cards
I’ve upgraded to the Final Cut Studio 2 but my video card is old. I have a GeForce FX 5200 using the AGP slot and only have 64mb of VRAM. Need some help on deciding what video card I need as I can’t even open Color, not enough VRAM.
I have an older PowerMac G5. Here are my specs:
1.8 GHz
Dual Processor
1.5 GB of memory
DON’T have PCI Express, which limits what I can do, so I’ve been told. Apple told me to buy the ATI Radeon X1900 but I looked it up and it says you need PCI Express. I told him I don’t have it and he said it would still work!The specs for Color recommends: “An AGP or PCI Express Quartz Extreme graphics card.”
So I need help finding the right video card for my old G5.

i’m almost in the same boat, but my G5 is a bit newer (same old GeForce card, though). i’ve been pointed to this 1900 card by several people so far, and it’s probably what i’m going to buy. i first went to CompUSA (where i have a corporate account and buy most of my stuff), but then found the card online for almost half the price of CompUSA. it seems to be a highly recommended card, and if you search over on the other FCP forum, i think you’ll find that to be true.
i’m also in the market to buy a second monitor to have dual-screen editing, as well as a better (hopefully HD?) output monitor. looking at a 24″ Gateway for just under $600…

Probably the best card for you is the ATI X800.

There are two version of the ATI 1900 card, one for Mac Pros and one for G5 systems. But they both need PCI-Express.
Most of the G5s out there don’t have PCI-Express. Instead they have AGP slots. So the best card for Macs with a AGP slot is the ATI X800.
Caution: you can’t just go by a card from CompUSA. It needs to be made for the mac.

Also-having gone through a trumendous amount of research while looking for a good graphics card-you’ll really need to understand how many monitors you’ll want to connect and how they will contect!!!
I needed to connect 2 VGA monitors through my older G5, and there is not that many choices-I believe one? This will also be a problem for anyone with a G5 with an AGP who wants dual monitors. Almost all of the remaining AGP cards will have one DVI or VGA connector and one ADC connector. The problem is unless you have a very old ADC to VGA connector, you’re not going to be able to connect anything to the other AGP card output-giving you only one monitor.I believe if you’re going to use 2 DVIs, you’ll still have some good options.
